Here is the answer for Windows users:

COMSOL Multiphysics can't export AVI files under Windows XP if certain
security updates (KB975560 and KB977914) are installed. It works under
Windows Vista and Windows 7. We believe that the cause is a bug in the
security update.

There is an entry for this in the support knowledge base:
http://www.comsol.com/support/knowledgebase/1087/

Talked to a MAC user yesterday - he was making flash videos instead, since the avi format isn't, according to him, valid on mac.
Hi !

I have the same problem in all versions, now also in 4.1, so today I am reporting this as a bug to COMSOL.

When several users have the same problem I hope they have a fix for it.
I am actually having the same problem, but on a Windows machine. I am using a work computer and do not have the right player for avi's, but was always able to convert them afterwards. Now, all I get from Comsol is an error saying "Failed to create animation." Gif and even Flash animations work fine.

I'm curious about this as well. It's a shame to lose functionality with a new version of a tool.

Cheers,
AVI support for Mac in COMSOL 4.0

I just upgraded to COMSOL 4.0 from 3.5a and am having difficulty exporting video in AVI format. I am working on a Mac, and get a pop up error message stating that "AVI files can only be generated if Windows is used." when I attempt to create AVI files. I never ran into any difficulty with this with earlier versions of COMSOL, and I seem to be able to save as an animated GIF without any trouble.

Has AVI support been removed for non-Windows platforms (and if so, why?), or am I overlooking something simple?

Thanks!
