Inverse waveguide-eigenmode problem

Please login with a confirmed email address before reporting spam

Hi,

In COMSOL v4, you can simulate the eigenmodes of an optical waveguide using 2D rf module, Eigenmode. You draw the cross-sectional shape of the waveguide and assign each domain with a refractive index, and it solves for the electric field shape of the mode.

Now, I want to do the inverse problem. I want to start with some 2D cross-section of the electric field shape of the mode, and get back out the 2D cross-section of the waveguide with refractive index information. This may seem hard, but actually it should not be hard -- there is a one-to-one correspondence between the fundamental optical mode and the waveguide cross-section. Obviously COMSOL is not designed to do this simulation. However I wonder if anyone has ideas of any tricks I can use to do this.

On a related note: Once I have figured out how to do that, in order to check that it is working, I'm imagining I will do this: Start with a waveguide drawing, simulate the eigenmode, export the electric field distribution, import that electric field distribution into my inverse-problem-solving model, and see if I get back the original waveguide. For that, I need to also export elec field distribution and import that elec field distribution. How is the best way of going about this?

Thanks,
