Implementation of a multi-axial pseudoelastic model in FEMLAB to predict dynamical behavior of shape memory alloys

Thiebaud, F., Collet, M., Foltete, E., Lexcellent C.
Institut FEMTO ST, UMR CNRS 6174, département LMARC

We present here how we have implemented the « RL model » ([RLT92]) in the multiphysic software FEMLAB. Beam in traction, a plate in pure shear, in proportional bitraction have been modelling. These studies will allow building some non linear "super-element" able to design composite structure, for dynamical studies with the built-in MATLAB interface.

Modeling dynamic of composite plate with PZT patches embedded by using FEMLAB3.1

Wang, J.
Mads Clausen Institute, University of Southern Denmark

As an important part of the smart/intelligent structures, the composite plate with piezoelectric-ceramics (PZT) patches embedded has numerous values in many engineering applications, such as: aerospace, automotive, civil and mechanical engineering. A composite thin plate excited by PZT actuators is considered in this work. To describe the dynamic response of the quadrate plate clamped at its ...

FEMLAB modules for bioengineering education

Butler, P.J.1, Ferko, M.C.2
1 Department of Bioengineering, Penn State University
2 Stryker Orthopedics Corporation

As biologists uncover the structural and functional complexity of living organisms, it is increasingly clear that mathematical models are needed to synthesize experimental data and predict biological responses to external stimuli. Bioengineers are well-suited to develop such models and to add mechanics, fluid flow and other physical cues to the understanding of biological structure and ...

On Teaching Chemical Engineering Fundamentals Using FEMLAB

William M. Clark,
Worcester Polytechnic Institute

We are investigating the feasibility of using FEMLAB as an integral part of the educational experience of chemical engineering students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Our current practices and immediate plans for using FEMLAB in teaching include homework and projects in a graduate course, simulations of unit operations laboratory experiments for use as pre-lab preparations for actual lab ...

FEMLAB® as a teaching and discovery tool for transport phenomena

Plawsky, J.L.
Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY

At Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute we have altered our undergraduate and graduate curricula so that we now teach transport phenomena (heat, mass, momentum, charge) in a holistic manner rather than as discrete courses. The traditional pencil-papercalculator toolset was found lacking and so we turned to FEMLAB® as a teaching tool to help enhance student understanding. In this paper, I will ...

Einsatz von FEMLAB in der Elektrotechnikausbildung

Timmerberg, J.
Fachhochschule Ostfriesland/Oldenburg/Wilhelmshaven, FB Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen, Wilhelmshaven

Visions Realized: Using COMSOL Multiphysics to Prepare Students for the Modern World

Bruce A. Finlayson
University of Washington
Washington, USA

This talk demonstrates the success in teaching chemical engineering undergraduates to use COMSOL Multiphysics (FEMLAB) to solve realistic problems in a project format. Undergraduates have been creative and solved problems much more difficult than those in their textbooks, thus gaining a deeper understanding of transport processes. Illustrations are also given how they check to see they’ve ...

Finite-element modeling of acoustic scattering from 3-D elastic structures

David S. Burnett
Naval Surface Warfare Center
Panama City, USA

The author is integrating a suite of software tools for modeling the scattering of acoustic beams (sonar) from undersea targets (mines) that may be buried or partially buried in the sedimentary ocean bottom in littoral (shallow water) environments. This is a Multiphysics problem involving acoustic waves in the water, acoustic or poro-elastic waves in the sediment, and both elastic and acoustic ...

Taking COMSOL Multiphysics Beyond Traditional Finite Elements

John Dunec
Palo Alto, USA

This talk will give you some tips and tricks for using techniques in COMSOL Multiphysics that you might not have known about. --------------------------------- Keynote speaker's biography: John Dunec received his Ph.D. from Stanford, specializing in numerical simulation of thermal-fluid systems. He has over two decades of experience in the field: first as a product engineer and manager at ...
