A Magnetic Brake Modeled in 2D

This example studies a magnetic brake that slows down a copper disk rotating in the magnet’s air gap. The rotation induces currents, and forces along the current lines impede the disk’s motion.

COMSOL Multiphysics models the static problem of computing the induced currents, Simulink computes the time-evolution of the angular velocity. In a second model, COMSOL Multiphysics’s extended multiphysics feature is used to solve the ODE/control problem.

In both cases the stationary problem of computing the magnetic field in the disk given a certain angular velocity is solved first.
