Schedule

9:50am
Welcoming Remarks
10:00am

Learn the fundamental workflow of the COMSOL Multiphysics® modeling environment. This introductory demonstration will show you the process of transforming models into specialized simulation applications and distributing them with COMSOL Compiler™ and COMSOL Server™, application deployment products.

10:45am
Break
11:00am
Invited Speaker
12:00pm
Break
12:15pm

Get an introduction to the techniques for constructing your own linear or nonlinear system of partial differential equations (PDEs), ordinary differential equations (ODEs), and algebraic equations within the COMSOL Multiphysics® software.

1:00pm
Break for Lunch
2:00pm

Industry and government organizations will showcase how they are using multiphysics simulation to improve products and solve problems.

3:00pm
Break
3:15pm

Sensitivity analysis can be used to identify important parameters that can then be changed manually or automatically using optimization. Optimization of these parameters enhances the performance of your product. In the case of manufacturing uncertainties, it is possible to compute several objectives and optimize for the worst of them. You will see several examples of how optimization can be set up in the COMSOL® user interface.

4:00pm
Break
4:15pm

Explore the tools for presenting COMSOL Multiphysics® results, including mirroring, revolving symmetric data, cut planes, cut lines, exporting data, joining or comparing multiple datasets, as well as animations.

5:00pm
Closing Remarks

Invited Speakers & Panelists

Rich Simons
AquiSense Technologies
Dr. Rich Simons is the head of application science at AquiSense Technologies and is based in London, UK. His role focuses on developing applications for UV-C LED systems for disinfection, including the use of computational design methods to optimize light distribution. Rich holds a PhD in the development of methods for optical modeling of UV-C LED-based water disinfection systems from Imperial College London.
Colin Jenkins
AAC Technologies
Colin Jenkins recently joined AAC Technologies as R&D director to set up a new MEMS R&D center in Edinburgh. He has 14 years of industrial experience designing MEMS microphone products using FEA and completed a doctorate in MEMS at the University of Strathclyde.
Sam Jackson
Dyson Technology Ltd
Sam Jackson gained his PhD in 2017, investigating the nonlinear interactions between elements in microcantilever array sensors. Since August 2017, Sam has worked in the acoustics research group at Dyson Technology Ltd. Initially, he was employed though the KTP program working alongside the UNDT group at Bristol University to explore the use of ultrasonic technology in Dyson products. He and the rest of the acoustics research group have utilized {:comsol} extensively both for research and product development.
Mark-Paul Buckingham
Xi Engineering Consultants Ltd.
Dr. Mark-Paul Buckingham is the managing director of Xi Engineering Consultants Ltd. He achieved first-class honors in mechanical engineering at the University of Edinburgh and also completed a PhD in mechanical engineering, specializing in measurement of vibration reduction. He then formed his first company, Reactec Ltd., a spinoff from the university. Reactec launched and created a product for the prevention of vibration-induced diseases, such as hand-arm vibration. In 2011, he split off the consulting branch of Reactec to form Xi Engineering Consultants. Xi Engineering specializes in accelerating R&D and solving complex engineering challenges. Xi Engineering helps clients optimize their products by combining advanced multiphysics modeling and exacting measurement.
Alex Bond
Quintessa Ltd
Alex Bond trained as a geologist (MA) and hydrogeologist (MSc, PhD) and has nearly twenty years of experience in the UK and international nuclear and other energy industries. Alex works on a wide range of international projects for Quintessa Ltd. (a COMSOL Certified Consultant), including radioactive waste management, reactor safety, regulator support, site investigation, legacy site management, and research project management. A large part of his work involves complex coupled numerical analysis and the COMSOL Multiphysics® software is one of the main tools that Alex uses.

COMSOL Speakers

Andrew Young
COMSOL
Andrew Young is a technical manager at COMSOL, specializing in heat transfer and fluid flow. He studied mathematics at the University of Strathclyde, where he also earned his EngD in medical devices. His research involved the CFD analysis of patient-specific cardiovascular modeling.
James Gaffney
COMSOL
James Gaffney works at COMSOL as an applications engineer for acoustics. He studied acoustical engineering at the University of Southampton, where he also earned his doctorate degree. His research involved predicting the fuselage installation effects from engine fan tones with analytical methods.
Nicole Casalini
COMSOL
Nicole received her master's degree in biomedical engineering from University Politecnico di Milano. Her final thesis focused on nonlinear anisotropic material modelling for cardiovascular applications. She joined COMSOL in 2018 as an applications engineer specialising in structural mechanics.
Nathaniel Davies
COMSOL
Nathaniel Davies joined COMSOL in early 2020 as an application engineer specializing in electromagnetism. He studied at Oxford University, completing an undergraduate degree and PhD in condensed matter physics with a research specialism in novel magnetic and superconducting materials.
