By means of a numerical 3D-FEM-simulation, some alternatives for the arrangement of the waveguide supplying the microwave energy to a cylindrical ceramic filter are investigated. The different alternatives are compared concerning a homogenous distribution of the electromagnetic field and the resulting microwave heating initiating the combustion of the diesel sooty particles.

The results of this simulation are compared and validated with experimental data gathered from a real microwave assisted cleaning system for diesel sooty particles. In summary, the results of the numerical simulation made by COMSOL Multiphysics for the distribution of the temperature in the ceramic filter presented a very good correlation with the experimental results.
