How to draw analytical binary geometry in COMSOL 4.2?

Hi,

I want to draw a 2D periodical grating geometry. the analytic function is sign(cos(x +y^2)) and MATLAB draws it very easily. how ever when I tried to do this with the waveform function in COMSOL 4.2, or sign function, it cant draw well the transitions between 1 and -1.
even if I want to draw a 1D periodical grating the sign(cos(x)) function produces bad results. smoothing of the function helps but not in the 2D case. but it is obvious the a 1D grating geometry can easily be drawn by rectangulars, so I want to know how can I do it analytically especially for the 2D case.
please help me.
