Modeling Overview: Nondestructive Testing Methods

You can use the Acoustics Module, an add-on product to the COMSOL Multiphysics® software, to simulate nondestructive testing (NDT) methods. NDT includes techniques that can be used for evaluating structural integrity without causing permanent damage. This is especially valuable in industries where it's crucial that there is no damage to the specimen and where such testing is costly, such as the aviation industry. In this previously held webinar, a brief introduction to COMSOL Multiphysics® and the Acoustics Module is provided. Then, we go over what NDT methods are, which industries use these testing methods, and some examples of NDT techniques and what they are used for, including:

  • Acoustic emission testing for impact detection
  • Electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs)
  • Ultrasonic waves

Following this, we show how to build a model from start to finish for simulating angle beam nondestructive testing.

This webinar is relevant to recently released versions of COMSOL Multiphysics®. You may notice small differences between versions. You can learn more about the Acoustics Module here.
