Plastic Deformation During the Expansion of a Biomedical Stent
Application ID: 2197
A stent is a wire-mesh tube used to keep a coronary artery open following balloon angioplasty, a procedure that widens a narrowed artery by compressing plaque against the artery wall. Stent design is important for percutaneous transluminal angioplasty with stenting. During this procedure, a balloon expands the stent within the blood vessel. The expanded stent acts as a scaffold that keeps the vessel open.
Nonuniform expansion and stent foreshortening can damage the artery during deployment. To assess a stent design, you can study its deformation under the radial pressure that expands it. With this model, you can monitor dogboning and foreshortening and investigate how changes to the geometric design parameters affect performance.
This model example illustrates applications of this type that would nominally be built using the following products:
however, additional products may be required to completely define and model it. Furthermore, this example may also be defined and modeled using components from the following product combinations:
- COMSOL Multiphysics® et
- soit le Module Geomechanics, ou Module Nonlinear Structural Materials et
- soit le Module MEMS, ou Module Structural Mechanics
The combination of COMSOL® products required to model your application depends on several factors and may include boundary conditions, material properties, physics interfaces, and part libraries. Particular functionality may be common to several products. To determine the right combination of products for your modeling needs, review the Grille des spécifications and make use of a free evaluation license.
