Optimization of Thermal Management Systems
Designing efficient thermal management systems, such as heat exchangers, requires balancing two competing objectives: maximizing heat transfer and minimizing pumping power. This is due to the fact that structural features at small length scales enhance thermal contact while simultaneously increasing flow resistance. Branching flow path designs offer a way to achieve a good balance between the two objectives, but creating such geometries can be challenging.
This webinar will demonstrate how shape and topology optimization can be used to automatically generate high-performance designs for heat exchangers and fluid flow systems. The main focus will be on heat exchanger geometries, with additional examples covering how to minimize stress due to thermal expansion and how to optimize pipes for a district heating network. All examples rely on the built-in gradient-based optimization capabilities in the COMSOL Multiphysics® software.
