Approximation of curvature for surface tension calculation in two phase flow models

Hi,

in the two phase flow, Level Set Method, application modes the surface tension forces are computed using an formulation of the curvature which doesn't use the derivative of the surface normal vector.
In the MEMS Users Guide, on page 353, first equation, this formulation is presented but no reference to the origin or deduction of this equation is given.

Can anyone help me to find some literature covering the approximation of curvature using this second-derivative free method?
