Convective diffusion

Has anybody an idea how to speed up the solution of the convective diffusion equation? First I solve Navier-Stokes, and then use the velocity field in convective diffusion. Simulating 100 sec took 35 hours with a Linux workstation with 16 GB RAM, because the convergence is very bad, ~100, i.e. the time steps are of the order of milliseconds. The number of elements is not that large, ca. 30,000. I have tried different stabilization parameters without success.

The problem is 3D and and cannot be reduced to, say, 2D with axial symmetry. Flow rate is rather low, Reynolds number ~2.
