Subset of results with same dimensionality

It seems that all of the methods of defining user datasets return data in at least one less dimension than the results generated by the model, e.g. cut planes, iso-surface, and parameterized surfaces can be extracted from a 3D model. But, we want to extract a 3D subset of the solution. Specifically, we want to manipulate the results from selected domains - typically one domain. We don't want the surface of the domain, a surface through it, a slice or anything short of all the results within the volume of interest. How can that be done?
