How to Set Up and Run a Simulation with COMSOL Multiphysics
For new users of COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software, a proper introduction on how to set up and run a model is essential when learning how to use the software. To help the learning process, there is a streamlined workflow you can follow that is reflected throughout the user interface of COMSOL Multiphysics.
This tutorial video provides you with an overview of the workflow and shows you how to develop and execute a multiphysics simulation from start to finish.
The workflow is as follows:
- Set up the model environment
- Create geometrical objects
- Specify material properties
- Define physics boundary conditions
- Create the mesh
- Run the simulation
- Postprocess the results
To demonstrate the use of the workflow in the tutorial, we simulate Joule heating and thermal expansion of a two-hot-arm thermal actuator made of polysilicon. The material properties of polysilicon are temperature-dependent, so the electrical conductivity of the material changes as the temperature increases. An electric potential is applied between the two hot arms. The DC-induced resistive heating causes a temperature rise in the actuator, which leads to thermal expansion. The three physics involved are all fully coupled. Our results include the electric potential, temperature rise, and von Mises stress in the actuator.
