crystallographic direction, global and local coordinate system

Hi. I need to know how we can define the crystallographic direction of single crystal Silicon. I am not entirely sure when we use global coordinate system, what direction X-Y points to. I am also not sure when we use local coordinate system, is the local coordinate system aligned with [1 0 0] direction?
