Failure Prediction in a Layered Shell

Laminated shells made of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) are common in a wide variety of applications due to their high strength-to-weight ratio. Laminated shells are widely used in the aerospace, marine, automotive, and manufacturing industries. To ensure reliable designs, it is necessary to evaluate the structural integrity of a laminated shell under a given set of applied loads.
In this example, the failure indices and safety factors for a shell laminate with a ply orientation of 90/-45/45/0 are compared with a NAFEMS benchmark solution. The example demonstrates the use of the Shell interface for modeling layered shells, as well as the Safety feature for predicting failure under a given set of applied loads.
