Charge-Discharge Studies of Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries

A lithium-ion battery comprises of two intercalating electrodes separated by a membrane, sandwiched between aluminum and copper current collecting plates. The battery performance depends upon several parameters and its operating conditions. In this work we developed a model for a lithium iron phosphate battery and validated our results with experimental charge-discharge curves. We however note that the system is away from equilibrium. Hence the activated barrier crossing processes in the device, such as, electrochemical reaction rates and diffusion coefficient of lithium ions are different during charging and discharging of the single cell. The studies could help in the development of thermal and capacity fading models, and also development of analytics for products where the lithium ion battery is used as a component.
