Syntactic foams are hollow particle filled composites that have recently emerged as attractive materials for use in advanced structural applications in aerospace and defence industry.

Ultrasonic characterization of these foams is performed extensively in order to understand the effect of porosity and particle size on the ultrasonic properties such as longitudinal velocity and attenuation. Experimental studies postulated that scattering from the microballoons surface as well as absorption from the resin matrix are the predominant features of wave attenuation [7,8].

Numerical simulations using COMSOL 4.2 are performed to validate the phenomena of scattering from the microballoons surface as well as absorption from the resin matrix observed in experimental study. A phenomenon of wave reflections at different surfaces has been observed for different particle sizes and validity of the intensity of these reflections with experimental results will be discussed in this study.
