Mixers and stirred tank reactors are widely used in the pharmaceutical, fine chemical, and food & beverage industries, where the quality, reproducibility, and uniformity of products are critical. One effective approach to ensuring that product requirements are met is to use simulation to design and optimize the operation of these mixers or reactors. Typical simulation results can include velocity and pressure fields, mixing efficiency, maximum shear rate, impeller power and torque, solute concentration or residence time, and temperature fields.

In this webinar, we will explore the capabilities of the COMSOL® software for modeling mixers and stirred tank reactors. COMSOL Multiphysics® and its add-on products offer comprehensive functionality for modeling both laminar and turbulent flow as well as single-phase and multiphase flow. For instance, there are features for surface tracking of liquid surfaces in tanks with rotating impellers. Additional capabilities enable the modeling and analysis of reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and multicomponent transport within a mixer.
