Fundamental Three Dimensional Modeling and Parameter Estimation of a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst for Heavy Duty Trucks

A. Holmqvist[1] and C.U.I. Odenbrand[1]

[1]Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, LTH, Lund University, Lund, Sweden

Mathematical optimization can be used as a computational engine to generate the best solution for a given problem in a systematic and efficient way. In the context of monolithic converter systems, the parameter estimation problem (or inverse problem) is solved using Partial Differential Equations (PDE)-based models of the physical system coupled with an optimization algorithm. These problems are ...

Effects of the Film Thickness on the Transient Conjugate Opticalthermal Fields in Thin Films Irradiated by Moving Sources in Back and Front Treatments

N. Bianco[1], O. Manca[2], S.Nardini[2], and D. Ricci[2]

[1]DETEC, Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, Napoli, Italy
[2]DIAM, Seconda Università degli Studi di Napoli, Aversa, CE, Italy

A two dimensional transient analysis of the conjugate optical-thermal fields induced in a multilayer thin film structure by a moving Gaussian laser source is carried out numerically in order to compare back and front laser treatment processes. Thermal and optical nonlinearity is induced during transient heating, since the response of weakly absorbing thin films depends on temperature. The heat ...

Contactless Excitation of MEMS Resonant Sensors by Electromagnetic Driving

M. Baù[1], V. Ferrari[1], and D. Marioli[1]
[1]Department of Electronics for Automation, University of Brescia, Brescia, Italy

A contactless electromagnetic principle for the excitation of mechanical vibrations in resonant structures has been investigated. The principle relies on no specific magnetic property of the resonator except electrical conductivity and can be adopted for employing the structures as resonant sensors for measurements either in environments not compliant with the requirements of active electronics ...

Multiphysics Modelling of a Micro Valve

F. Bircher[1] and P. Marmet[1]

[1]Institute of Print Technology, Bern University of Applied Sciences, Burgdorf, Switzerland

Electromagnetic micro valves are currently developed empirically or the different physics are treated separately. To accelerate the development-process and for a better understanding of the overall system, a multiphysics simulation is built up. This simulation considers the electromagnetics, the electronics (including the control of the process), the mechanics and the fluidics with respect to ...

Analog to Digital Microfluidic Converter

R. Dufour [1], C. Wu[1], F. Bendriaa[1], V. Thomy[1], and V. Senez[1]
[1]BioMEMS Group, IEMN, University of Lille Nord de France, Villeneuve d’Ascq, France

This paper presents an Analog to Digital Microfluidic Converter (ADMC) using passive valves and enabling the conversion of a continuous liquid flow into droplets for Electro-Wetting On Dielectric (EWOD) actuation. Valves calibration, geometry characteristics and losses reduction have been optimized using microfluidic application mode of COMSOL Multiphysics®.

Two-Dimensional Modelling of a Non-Isothermal PrOx Reactor with Water Cooling for Fuel Cell Applications

H. Beyer[1], B. Schönbrod[1], C. Siegel[1], M. Steffen[1], and A. Heinzel[1][2]
[1]Zentrum für BrennstoffzellenTechnik GmbH, Duisburg, Germany
[2]Institut für Energie und Umweltverfahrenstechnik, University of Duisburg-Essen, Duisburg, Germany

This work treats of a preferential oxidation reactor, which is simulated by a two-dimensional axial symmetric model. The reactor serves as purification of hydrocarbon reformat and converts the CO mole fraction from up to 1 % in the feed gas down to a few ppm at the outlet to deliver a hydrogen rich feed gas for a PEM fuel cell. The model combined chemical kinetic expressions, which were ...

Energy Transformation Damping

G.S. Mulder[1]
[1]Leiden, The Netherlands

A model for material damping is presented in terms of internal friction and in terms of a variation of stiffness. In the latter case the idea is that the stiffness increases if elastic energy is stored and decreases if elastic energy is released. In case of a single mass spring system “stiffness” refers to the stiffness of the spring; in case of a continues object &ldquo ...

Cascades of Secondary Particles in High Voltage Accelerators

M. Cavenago[1], P. Antonini[1][3], P. Veltri[2], N. Pilan[2], V. Antoni[2], and G. Serianni[2]
[1]INFN-LNL, Legnaro, Padova, Italy
[2]Consorzio RFX, Padova, Italy
[3]Centro Ric. E. Fermi, Roma, Italy

A very simplified system for high voltage test is studied, considering reason for voltage holding failures which are not covered by conventional and local design criteria. A first understanding of the problem is obtained by solving the electrostatic potential in a 2D axis symmetric geometry, considering in detail the electrode shapes, and following a cascade of particle between opposite ...

A Finite Element Test of the 2002-2003 Etna Eruption

F. Pulvirenti[1][2], M. Aloisi[1], G. De Guidi[2], M. Mattia[1], and C. Monaco[2]
[1]Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Sezione di Catania, Catania, Italy
[2]Dipartimento di Scienze Geologiche, Università di Catania, Catania, Italy

Structural, morphological and ground deformation studies suggest that the eastern flank of Mt. Etna (eastern Sicily) is spreading seaward. Three contrasting models have been proposed: deep-seated spreading, shallow sliding and tectonic block movements. In order to better understand the kinematics of instability processes on eastern flank of Mt. Etna, a numerical simulation has been applied to a ...
